This cache was created as part of the International Cache
Exchange programme. The box was prepared in the UK by Stu &
Sarah, and hidden in Finland by Harjus (H+K). Its sister cache is
here.
Kirvunlinna hillfort lays in the middle of low-lying fields. Its
size is about 400 x 200 meters. In the area there are some ravines
from the ice age, containing rock banks, which have acted as
blockades. The hillfort's south-eastern, south-western and western
slopes are very steep. The hillfort's fortifications can be seen
best in the sout-east corner, along with gate constructions. There
is also a cave on the hillfort. Tradition tells that people of the
Pälkäne municipality used this cave as a hiding place at the time
of Isoviha, The Great Wrath (The Russian occupation of Finland at
the beginning of 18th century.)
The maintenance of the Kirvunlinna hillfort started with common
cleaning of the terrain in 1993. Some coppice was removed and the
view to the surrounding area was opened out. Nowadays the groves of
the steep south-west and west slopes are protected by the law of
environmental protection.
At the top of the hillfort there is an old table with seats.
Please be very careful when searching for this cache. It can be
very dangerous to search during rain and in wintertime.
Kirvunlinna on alavan peltomaan keskellä oleva kalliovuori. Se
on lakialueeltaan kooltaan noin 400 x 200 m. Kohteessa on muutama
jääkauden aikainen rotko, joissa on paikoin kivivallitusta sulkuna.
Linnavuoren kaakkois-, lounais- ja länsirinteet ovat hyvin jyrkät.
Linnavuoren varustuksista parhaiten ovat näkyvissä
kaakkoiskulmauksen porttirakennelmat. Mäellä on myös luola, jota
perimätiedon mukaan pälkäneläiset käyttivät piilopaikkana Isonvihan
aikaan 1700-luvun alkupuolella.
Kirvunlinnan hoito aloitettiin perusraivauksella vuonna 1993.
Kohteesta poistettiin vesakkoa ja avattiin näkymää ympäröiville
alueille. Nykyään linnavuoren jyrkät lounais- ja länsirinteet ovat
luonnonsuojelulain perusteella suojeltuja lehtoja.
Linnavuoren huipulla on vanha pöytä penkkeineen. Ole varovainen,
kun etsit kätköä. Etenkin sateella ja talvella alueella liikkuminen
voi olla vaarallista.
