Sallies: We were in the area and went to check on this cache. Unfortunately it has gone missing so we have decided to archive the listing. It is hard to see how this cache went missing if it had been replaced carefully and as it was actually triple boxed to ensure a dry log book we have chosen to leave the area open for others.

Geocache Description:

The cache is hidden on the loop track around Lake Matheson. We had always thought the this lake was New Zealand's best kept and most well hidden secret, but on arrival found that there is now a cafe in the car park. But to see the lake and its wonderful reflections there is no other way but to walk in. On a clear day you will also get wonderful views of Mt Cook.

The cache is now (14-12-05) a set of waterproof containers, with the log book in a film canister in the very middle.
It is not a good idea to leave swaps in this cache as they will deteriorate due to the weather conditions.
The cache is hidden on the NE side of the lake at the base of a dead tree. There is adequate satellite coverage on this section of the track.

If you have time to do the full 1hr 30min loop track, it is well worth while. If you are short on time you can get to the cache in 30-40 minutes by walking up the right hand side of the loop, but do carry on for a few minutes to see the views at Reflection Island. Going this way it is a walk of just over 1km each way.
