Toll Plaza Redux Traditional Cache

This cache has been archived.

SnoWake: After the recent DNF, I was encouraged to take another attempt at finding this cache. Don't feel bad about a DNF: I've been here three times looking for it since learning the camera was full.

Actually, this cache lived on much longer than I expected - I though the toll plaza construction and activity, and even the eventual landscaping, would result in this cache going MIA.

Well, I was coming home late tonight, and decided to have another go at it. Like before, there was the spot where I thought I remembered placing it - but I couldn't come up with it. Widened my radius, and searched round and round - and was just about to give up, again...

When I spotted it. Was happy to be able to retrieve this cache, so that it can be recycled. Thanks to all who found this one: I'll get the camera developed and will post the pictures here, as well as on gotwake.

Geocache Description:

An interesting view of things to come. After 15 years of living in Martinez, I was finally movitated to travel these roads and see some fresh perspectives of a rather familiar thoroughfare, ans well as a preview of things to come.

With the construction of the new Benicia-Martinez Bridge, there are LOTS of changes in the works here - including migrating the toll plaza to the south side of the bridge. Take a look around - drive on a bit further on what I'm confident will be part of the new 5-lane northbound span, now just parking area for construction workers. For more information, including some historical and "future" photos, click here. Not exactly a "scenic" view - but one reason for placing this cache was to motivate me to return periodically to monitor progress and watch the evolution of what is reported (at the link above) as "the most used span in the state" (I find this hard to believe - but there it is, on a CalTrans site). I will relocate the cache if this spot becomes unsuitable for any reason - but for now I'm confident it's fine, and I suspect it always will be.

Original cache contents included LOTS of good stuff for the first few to find:

  • Logbook, pens, and geocaching note
  • Disposable camera (snap a photo, note number of exposures remaining)
  • New silver gc.com micro (I expect whoever takes this to place it for us to hunt)
  • MagLite Solitaire w/lanyard
  • geocaching.com patch
  • Bottle of Cozumel sand w/ shell
  • RSA Conference squeeze pyramid
  • Speedy Gonzales PEZ dispenser
  • Large glow-in-the-dark SuperBall
  • Whoopie cushion
  • Fortune Bracelet (from FTF at Cache No-Cache East)
  • Rubber duckie
  • SpongeBob SquarePants
  • Smiley Face Yo-Yo
  • Signature Gotwake thermometer-compass
  • TeamAlamo Visa Olympics pin
  • Monsters, Inc clip-on
  • Red mardi gras beads
  • Computer Associates Mail Truck
  • Winnie the Pooh clip-on
  • Jelly Belly smashed penny
  • Glow-in-the-dark (clip-on) earrings

May be easier to be discreet at night - but that's just me. I scouted during the day, then returned at night to mark coordinates and again to place, parking very near the cache. Some tree cover, but used averaging to get reported precision of < 20'. I suggest wearing long pants.
