Geocache Description:

The Infamous Snipe Hunt

A group of twelve year old Scouts were sitting around the final campfire of Summer Camp. Nothing was more important than the “badge” they had to earn tonight… They had been told all the stories by those they looked up to. The older Scouts spun yarns of lengthy hikes through the woods on moonlit nights where they would come home with burlap sacks full of the rare beast... They themselves were once in the younger Scouts’ shoes. They knew the difficulties that lay ahead.

The young Scouts had been practicing their calls and honing their reflexes in preparation. They had their flashlights fresh and their pillow cases empty. They were nervous and restless but they thought they were prepared for the great task that lay ahead. They had no idea.

The older Scouts rustled them out of their tents at 1:30AM. They were supposed to be getting their rest but they couldn’t fall asleep. The excitement that was building was just too much, they couldn’t get a wink in! They followed their faithful leaders quietly out the back of the campsite. They walked silently down the trail with their lights off trying to conserve every last bit of energy in their batteries. They kept going over the instructions they were given on the first day of camp. Hold on tight, don’t drop your light, keep the bag open, and make sure that your snipe call is just right!

After walking for nearly a half-hour, the older Scouts told them they had reached the area where snipes had last been seen. "Look there", said one, "see the glowing red eyes?" The young Scouts strained to see and nodded their heads collectively even though their inexperienced eyes could not see a single thing...

The older Scouts once again went over the instructions. The young Scouts would be responsible for the luring and capture while the older Scouts were going to spread out in the woods and force the snipe in the direction of their open sacks.

The young Scouts proudly began searching and making their coos while the older Scouts snuck off just as silently as they had arrived.

With light just starting to make shades of pink in the darkened sky the young Scouts finally return, crestfallen and disappointed, to their bunks and creep into their sleeping bags for a few moments of shuteye.

Only a few hours later at breakfast the older Scouts, offering their condolences and words of encouragement, just said, “there’s always next summer.”

You will need to supply your own pencil. A snipe ate mine.
