Geocache Description:

An easy drive up micro find for the whole family.

This microcache is located around the Barrowtown Pump Station. There is a little park with old equipment and plaques that tell the story of Sumas Lake.

Prior to 1870, Sumas Lake was a tidal lake 45 kilometers long, 10 kilometers wide and 8 meters deep located between Chilliwack and Abbotsford where Hwy 1 is today. The lake connected to the Fraser River via Lower Sumas River. In 1920, a project to reclaim the lake bottom for agriculture was started and involved the construction of dykes, ditches, canals and a pump house. On July 7, 1924, Sumas Lake was completely drained and 22,000 acres of farm land were reclaimed at a total cost of 3.625 million dollars. In 1984, the old pump house was decommissioned and the now existing pump house was built at a total cost of 20.65 million dollars. It is this system of dykes, canals and ditches that keep the Sumas Prarie dry.

In this cache is a 2003 nickel. Each time the cache is visited, the finder should remove the existing coin and add one that is older. Please mention what year coin you took and what year coin you left in your log writeup.
