Geocache Description:

The first location takes you to a Veterans of Foreign Wars monument at the beginning of a park in Pelham. There you will find the coordinates to the cache, located in a different park which is named for a Pelham Veteran.

This cache honors our deceased friend, Major John H. Hargreaves, a highly decorated 30 year veteran of the U. S. Army. The naming of this cache comes from John’s license plate, 3 Wars, which he had for more than 30 years in the state of NH. Born in 1919, John entered the National Guard in 1938, went on active duty in 1941 fighting in WWII, next Korea and then in Vietnam.

Retired in 1971, he was very active in many military veterans’ organizations. Major Hargreaves was a Past Commander and Life member of Pelham Memorial Post 10722 VFW and on March 9, 2004 lived to see the Town of Pelham vote to give the recently vacated Town Hall to that organization. It has been named after Major Hargreaves; See http://www.pelhamweb.org/vfw/.

The Pelham Town report, with his picture and biography, was dedicated to him in 1995. John was an active member of our Pelham community and the driving force in the renaming of Camp Alexander to the Pelham Veteran’s Memorial Park and the erection of a monument there.

Mrs. Hargreaves "gratefully" gave us permission to do this cache in honor of her husband Major Hargreaves and helped us with our preparations. As you stop at this monument, reflect on the sacrifices that men and women through the years have given of their lives to keep our country free.

Find the coordinates here to continue to the cache itself which is an ammo box containing patriotic items. There are also toys soldiers guarding the cache. They can be removed by children, but please let us know when there are only two left so we can replace them. If possible please leave items of a patriotic nature or something that reflects reverence to the men and women of our armed forces. Remember to sign the log and take a finder’s card.

You will need a knowledge of WWII history to understand the hint at the first location.

Like all of our caches, permission has been received from either the Pelham Parks & Recreation - or the Pelham Conservation Commission.

Always check for ticks!
