Geocache Description:

A short scenic hike in a very nice area, with some simple coordinate challenges. Most of the route is a wide, paved bike trail and the rest is hardpack dirt. Bike-friendly except for one trail section that's probably not meant for bicycles although it's not marked as such. Walking, most people can probably do this in 45 minutes or so, but longer if you take your time and enjoy the scenery.

UPDATE 9/8/04: After the original ammo can was muggled twice, I changed the final location and container. The container is now a sign-only micro so there is nothing worth stealing, which is unfortunately less fun for kids. :( The new location doesn't have quite the same twist as the original either. If you've done part of this cache before, only the final location coordinates and the answer for "U" have changed, all of the numbers you had to track down remain the same.

Suggested parking is at N37 09.918', W121 39.602'. The last hundred yards or so is dirt road with potholes, so maybe leave the Ferrari at home. There is another possible parking area but this is the one I use and it's very close to another geocache. You could also ride or walk in from either direction of the bike trail.

STAGE ONE: Proceed to N37 09.980' W121 39.205' via the equestrian trail, which is more dirt road. Fine for mountain bikes and I see roadies riding this part too. The coordinates are for a 4-way intersection. At one corner of this intersection there is a large sign describing some of the local critters. From this sign:

Length in feet males can grow to = A
Length in feet that females can grow to = B
Low range of weight for males (in pounds) = CDE

There is also a pleasant bridge nearby. There is a sign that indicates that vehicles over a certain weight should not use the bridge. The number of tons shown = F.

D - C = G
F + C = H
C + D = I

STAGE TWO: Proceed across the bridge and follow the paved trail to N37 CE.CGH, W121 39.AFI. The last short distance is off the paved trail and on dirt road. At the coordinates you'll be at one of the small vehicle bridges. There are some letters and a four-digit date on the East side of this bridge, and that date = JKLM. Be careful when you read these numbers, as one is easy to mistake for another number.

STAGE THREE: Back on the paved bike trail, go to N37 EK.KIJ, W121 39.FGJ. There is a trail sign here. Follow this narrow dirt walking trail (my favorite part) and watch for posts with the names of nearby plants. The name plates each have a single digit number on them as well. Match the name to the associated number on the plate:

English Walnut = N
California Buckeye = P
Western Sycamore = Q
Willow Species = R
N + Q = T
M - G = U

STAGE FOUR: The final stage! Here we throw in a new but minor twist to test your navigational worthiness: the final coordinates for the cache are in UTM. Find it at 10 S EMJTLKB, ICJUEHQ. The container is a camo Starbucks mint tin.

This is our first Multi, and I tried to make it something enjoyable for all skill levels. Feedback is encouraged.

Spoilers (text or images) for the final cache location will be deleted, so please don't post any. :)

2009 update: The cache has moved very slightly since this was originally published, as the hide area changed slightly. The original coordinates are probably off just a bit now. Restrict your search to logical spots & you should find it.
