How Geocaching Works

Geocache Description:

War: one of the Four Horsemen of the Apocalypse.

This is the FIRST in a series of four caches, each with its own container and web page. But they make up a multi-cache in the sense that you must visit each one to get the coordinates for the next cache. Only this first cache, WAR, has the correct coordinates posted.

The four caches take their individual names from the Four Horsemen of the Apocalypse, who are traditionally considered to represent War, Famine, Pestilence, and Death…elements of life that are still very much with us, nearly 2000 years after their last description in the Bible. The Four Horsemen are familiar symbols and offer the opportunity for plenty of discussion and contemplation about the vicissitudes of life. Do this while you take the pleasant walk between the four caches.

There is a code word inside the lid of the container. TO GET CREDIT FOR THIS CACHE, EMAIL ME THE CODE WORD FOUND INSIDE THE LID. Also inside the lid of this cache will be the coordinates to lead you to the second cache of this series, FAMINE.

The city of San Diego started recreating a wetland down below the cache in June 2004 and it was nearly complete. You'll get a nice view from the cache site. It's a little ironic that they had to install about 20 miles of irrigation pipe and sprinklers to make sure the wetland stayed wet. Then, a few months later, a flood destroyed it all.

28 Sep 2008 Update. Someone gave us this container a couple of years ago and the recent fire here gave us the perfect opportunity to use it. The cache is small but the container is micro. It’s suited for only very small objects. Bring your own writing instrument. The first container burned up so this replacement is better suited for the fire-ravaged, barren environment. Fire AND Flood: what better evidence for the coming apocalypse?

The terrain rating is based on our preferred approach. There may be an easier way. Please stay on the trails. Minor bushwhacking possibly necessary if there's been a lot of rain recently. Have fun.

Remember Geocache Etiquette
1. Don’t leave blank space in the logbook. Use all available white space, including the back of each page. Use a line to separate your entry from the one above it.
2. Reseal the container tightly to keep out moisture.
3. Rehide carefully.
