Geocache Description:

What are the cars doing in the trees?

A friend took me on an evening hike on a trail I haven't been on before. Local lore has it that prior to the homes being built at the top of the hill, residents used to roll their unwanted cars down the hill. Thus, the cars are in the trees. Really wierd when you first see it. Thank goodness for the car donation programs!

No PO between trail and car, no bushwhacking necessary. Some loose leaves that make the going a bit treacharous. Nice hike that is mostly shaded. The cache is about 25' off trail. Look for the cars. Really.

I used the trailhead behind the dorms at CSUH. You can buy a daily permit. No permits are required on Sundays. If you're mountain biking, this starts as a fire-road, but is almost all single track. You can also reach the cache by using the Zeile Creek trailhead at GCPQGV.

If you come from Cal State Hayward, the road you initially follow descends to the old Sea Lion observatory which is now closed. This bulding can also be seen from across a creek tributary when approaching from the Zeile Creek entrance. The building was used by Cal State Hayward for environmental education, with much of the research there involving marine mammals. Eventually the building was determined to be too far from core campus services and it was abandoned. The land around the building is owned by the state but managed by EBRPD. Only the immediate area around the building is off limits due to safety concerns.
