The road that will take you near the cache, if taken from west to east, though rough, does not require 4WD or high clearance, although high clearance would be advisable. If accessing the cache via the road from the east 4WD is likely necessary. The canyon walls will perhaps cause elusive coordinates, but this cache should still be a fairly easy find. The cache is in a small ammo can at an elevation of 6145ft.
Silver Canyon is always worth a visit without the additional attraction of the Desert Bighorn Sheep that live there. This animal is the most accomplished mountaineer imaganiable. If you are fortunate enough to spot one, or a group moving up the walls of this steep canyon, I'm sure you will be impressed with the agility of this amimal. The name of this cache speaks to how hard it is to spot the Desert Bighorn. The Bighorn is very good at watching you without their presense being known. Thus, the idea of looking for "rocks with legs" is a way of making the eye adapt to the task of seeing these crafty animals. Another way one might see the Bighorn that frequent this area is to walk about with eyes, and ears open. Sometimes the only indication that sheep are about is the noise of rocks being kicked loose by sheep above or below.
While the Bighorn you might see in Silver Canyon is not genetically identical to the Sierra Bighorn, I think you would enjoy viewing the documentary "Counting Sheep". Counting Sheep is available in DVD or VHS, and tells the story of the Sierra Bighorn, the first cousin of the sheep you may see in Silver Canyon.
Enjoy looking for the sheep, but remember that this is the Bighorn's home and you are the visitor. Please respect this fact.
Amoung the permanent contents of this cache is a camera to take pictures of the sheep, yourself, or whatever. When the film is used up let me know. I will retrieve the camera, process the film, and post some of the pictures. Original cache contents: micro tool, lanyard, cofee mug, digital thermometer, GPS batteries, bag of marbles, Oolif owl, 500 Colones, book "Sierra North", and premium sun block.
