WHo, WHAT, WHEN, WHERE, WHY & BLAIR WITCH

Back in 1785 there was a woman who was accused of witchcraft in her home village of Blair, Maryland. For her sentencing she was banished from the village to survive on her own in the woods. A year later after being banished, her accusers and half of the village’s children vanish.

A town called Burkittsville was established at the site of the abandoned Blair village about forty years later. From the time Burkittsville was built to the present day there have been a series of disappearances within the general area.

In 1994, three film students decide to travel to Burkittsville to film interviews with locals about the Blair Witch legend as a class project. As part of their documentary the student traveled through the woods where the accused Blair witch of 1785 was banished. A couple of days later the students disappeared in the nearby woods.

No trace of them was found until the footage they shot was discovered under an old cabin a year later.

What the film neglects to highlight is that the three students were armed with GPS units and a strong desire to hide a cache in the woods near Blair/ Burkittsville. Their cache was forgotten about...until now.

Really?
The legend of the Blair Witch was invented by the film's writer/directors, Daniel Myrick and Eduardo Sánchez. Myrick and Sánchez hired three young actors (Heather Donahue, Michael Williams, and Joshua Leonard), explained the outline of the film's story to them, gave them advice about the characters they were to play, then turned them loose in the woods with film equipment to shoot movie footage. The actors received notes and supplies left for them and carried a Global Positioning System (GPS) device with them for tracking purposes, but they didn't know exactly what was going to happen once they embarked on their movie-making venture -- thus the film has the feel of a documentary that captures events genuinely surprising to the filmmakers.
