Geocache Description:

The Springs of 85637 will hopefully be a series of caches which highlight hide sites that are dedicated to 4-wheel drive vehicles. Not knowing how many cachers out there have this vehicle capability, I will limit these caches to just this first one for now. The response will dictate whether or not I will continue with these.

4WD Challenge #1 is Apache Springs, nestled into the west side of the Whetstone Mountains in southern Arizona. The entry point for the challenge is on HWY 82 at N 31 43.438 W 110 29.182. With a decent topo map, you will be able to identify a route all the way to the cache site from this location. The point of the challenge is to get to the cache area using off road vehicles, not to spend all day actually finding a “well hidden cache.” Potential transportation modes are 4WD, ATV’s, mountain bikes, dirt bikes, horseback or hiking shoes. We made it there in a Jeep and on a 90cc quad. Choose your mode of travel wisely, as it is 13.3 miles by the route driven by our team, which is the shortest route from the entry point. DO NOT USE A NORMAL CAR FOR THIS CACHE! YOU WILL NOT MAKE IT! There are some pretty tight turn areas also. Depending on how you choose to get there, park any vehicles you leave behind near the creek bed beyond the cattle pens (about .5 miles beyond the pens themselves). The ranch owners who gave us permission to drive around their ranch require this. The cache is in the area of an old hunting cabin, which is obviously used by “other people” as well. Once in the area, the cache is a short walk through the bushes behind the cabin (50 feet) and fairly easy to find (if you are looking for it) at the base of a bush. The cache is a black ammo can with Official Geocache in yellow on the side. There is a nice first finders award available, as well as finders tags for the first 10 finders. Please take only one tag per team. Hope you enjoy the journey!Initial contents of the cache are the FTF award, 10 Cache Finder Tags, flashlight, puzzle, video game, bookmark, hand wipes, toy trucks, notepad from Hawaii, and salt from Germany. If someone would print out the Geocache find note and place it in the cache, I would be in your debt, as I forgot to include one.
