La cache è posta nella scalinata dell'Erta Canina. La scalinata parte vicino a Porta San Miniato (costruita da Arnolfo), dove si può ancora vedere un angolo con case risalenti all’epoca medioevale, questo è un angolo di Firenze quasi sconosciuto, lontano dai sentieri battuti, dal traffico, dal rumore e dalla folla, fermatevi e rilassatevi.
La scalinata arriva al Viale Galileo da cui si può raggiungere Piazzale Michelangelo (la migliore vista di Firenze) e continuare fino alle antiche chiese di San Salvatore e San Miniato. La cache può essere raggiunta anche dall'alto ma è una strada molto più lunga.
Una leggenda e una curiosità: San Miniato era un cristiano d’oriente stabilitosi a Firenze, martirizzato durante le persecuzioni dell’Imperatore Decio nel 250 d.C.La leggenda narra che una volta decapitato, il santo prese la sua testa, attraversò il fiume, salì la collina e non si posò finché non arrivò nel punto in cui è poi sorta la chiesa. Una curiosità: durante l’assedio del 1530 da parte delle truppe dell’Imperatore Carlo V, l’incaricato delle fortificazioni di difesa fu Michelangelo. Dopo aver disposto mura e bastioni, trovò un modo ingegnoso di proteggere la torre campanaria di San Miniato: appese ai suoi lati dei materassi per assorbire i colpi delle cannonate sparate dagli assedianti, salvando la torre.
The cache is placed in the stairway called Erta Canina. The stairway starts near the old gate Porta San Miniato (built by Arnolfo), where you can see still a nice corner with old buildings of the Middle-Age, this is a place almost unknown of Florence, off the beaten path, the traffic, the noise and the crowd, stop and relax.
The stairway arrives at Viale Galileo Galilei, from there you can arrive to Piazzale Michelangelo (the best view of Florence) and continue until the old churches of San Salvatore and San Miniato. You can reach the cache from upstairs too but it is a longer way.
A legend and an oddness: San Miniato was an eastern Christian who settled in Florence and was martyred during Emperor Decius's persecutions in A.D. 250. The legend says that the decapitated saint picked up his head, walked across the river, climbed up the hillside, and didn't lie down to die until he reached that spot.
An oddness: during the siege of 1530 by the Emperor Charles V, the man in charge of the defenses was Michelangelo. After providing ramparts and walls, found an ingenious way to protect the bell tower of San Miniato: he hung mattresses down the sides to absorb the shock of the cannonballs fired by besiegers, saving the tower.
