I was visiting caches at Lake Chabot, and I went and talked to
the ranger at the family campground kiosk. I asked her about the
big "No Day Use" sign inside the gate. She assured me that only
applies to cars - only campers are allowed to park in the
campground area. I then asked her about the line in the campground
brochure that reads "Campgrounds are for the use of campers only."
She told me that means that visitors may not hike in and then use a
campground slot in any way.
I then asked her if it was Ok to hike into and through the
family campground area if I was parked in day use parking
elsewhere, and she said "most definitely," so I hiked in and hid
this cache.
Note: as of 12/2007, it appears you can drive right to
the cache area. This may only apply during the winter months, so
see the note below...
To hike to the cache, park at N 37° 44.359 W 122° 05.864. Walk
down the road towards the campground kiosk. On your left a dirt
track will appear. That is the Towhee trail which goes to the cache
site. It runs behind the ranger station and around some campsites.
The distance is 1/2 mile, with a few slight grades.
Bring a pen. Wear your mittens. Look both ways before crossing
the road. All that stuff...
