DP1-The Five Sisters [Cascais] Traditional Geocache

This cache has been archived.

Lord of the Rocks: Someone's got it in for this cache. Rather take it with you instead of leaving everything lying around. The rain has done a good job destroying the cellulose bits of the cache. Hasta la vista.

Geocache Description:

Environmentally uncontrolled urban development that is rampant in our cities is a matter of great concern. Notably, even designated natural parks and reserves cannot escape and eventually succumb to realty pressures as a result of lack of vision by the local authorities. Nowadays, the various municipalities are more concerned with possible future municipal taxes than with providing well balanced communities where controlled and properly planned urban development occurs in conjunction with the preservation of virgin wooded land and/or ample parks for the community to enjoy. Where such pockets of undeveloped land still exist, which are becoming more of a rarity within the greater Lisbon area, these provide microcosms of pleasure.

This cache is designated to share with the geocacher one such microcosm that will no doubt eventually also succumb to urban development pressures, so please enjoy it while you can.

The cache is located at the triple point of Murtal-Alapraia-Caparide (by the way do you know where the name Murtal is derived from?) from where, on a clear day, you can get a great panoramic view of the whole of the Estoril coastline, the bay of Cascais, the Sintra Mountains (inc. Peninha, Pena Palace and several granitic outcrops). Very close to the cache site you can visit the Alapraia Caves (Grutas de Alapraia; N 38º 42.400’ W 009º 22.616’). These four prehistoric caves are interesting because of their urban setting. They date from 3000 b.C. (final of the Neolithic Period) and are presently being further investigated with the purpose of building a museum on site. (See more info in this link)

Recommendations:

  1. Parking available at: N 38º 42.549’ W 009º 22.377 and N 38º 42.428’ W 009º 22.337’. Those preferring to visit the site by bike be prepared to carry them on your backs up the hill. However, the return ride should suit all downhill enthusiasts to a tee (don’t forget to wear a helmet)!
  2. Access to cache terrain is steep and steep. Therefore wear appropriate shoes. In wet weather, the clay formed on the surface makes the climb very slippery.
  3. Walking staffs are recommended there and back.
  4. Cache is located in a sky open place.
  5. Horse riders, moto-X and quad bikes have been seen in the area. Watch out for traffic and be discrete in looking, logging and rehiding the cache.
  6. Practice cache in trash out – unfortunately the place needs it!
  7. Age limits for this cache hunt: 7 to 70!
  8. No night geocaching. You don’t know what you will find up on the hill on a dark night.
  9. Remember: SAFETY at all times. If you are going caching by yourself, let someone else know where and when you are going and the time you expect to return. Take a cell phone with you.

Happy hunting!
