Mihiwaka, Dunedin (Otago) Traditional Cache

This cache has been archived.

U.N.C.L.E.: I was really reluctant to archive this as it was one of my earliest caches and has been in place for almost 6 years. However, cumbyrocks log note alerted me to the fact that something may be going on at the site so I checked it today. Recently the floor of the tunnel has been lowered to allow bigger trains through and that stopped access to the cache for an extended period. That work is all finished but new work has sprung up above the tunnel portal. I have no idea what it is about and there was no-one on site today, although there is machinery present. As cumbyrocks noted, there is a new track cut in adjacent to the cache hiding place. Looking at the marks on the road there is obviously a lot of heavy machinery and trucks moving about here. So purely for safety reasons, and the fact that I'm unsure what is going to happen here in the near future, I have archived this cache and moved the container to a new location a bit further back down the road where things should be a bit safer.

Geocache Description:

Mihiwaka Station Rd leaves Purakaunui Rd at the school (well signposted). Get onto Purakaunui Rd from Blueskin Rd, which can be approached from either Port Chalmers or Waitati.

Mihiwaka Station Rd has not been well maintained in recent years but is quite OK with care. Park at the bottom and walk the last 100 metres of the "road" uphill. This part of the road is no exit, has no turning and is too rough for a car.

If you reach the gate you have gone too far. Beyond the gate is private property.

Free hint: Cache is on the creek side of the road.

Note: The suggested parking spot is where the old Mihiwaka Railway Station was located (buildings long since removed). Up until the 1970s locals would commute to and from work in Dunedin on trains that ran between Dunedin and Palmerston in the morning and late afternoon. The Mihiwaka tunnel is visible from this spot. Stay on the road side of the fence. The cache is nowhere near the tracks.

The cache is a one litre unpainted snaplock container.
