tiddalik: As there's been no cache to find for months, I'm archiving it to keep it from continually showing up in search lists, and to prevent it from blocking other cache placements. Geocache Description:

"Bright college days, oh, carefree days that fly,
To thee we sing with our glasses raised on high.
Let's drink a toast as each of us recalls
Ivy-covered professors in ivy-covered halls."

Bright College Days
AN EVENING (WASTED) WITH TOM LEHRER

Welcome to your guided tour of the University of Melbourne.
The University of Melbourne was founded very early in the history of the colony of Victoria, less than 20 years after Batman and Fawkner arrived. Teaching commenced in 1854, and the history of the University makes for some fascinating locations.

1. At our starting location, there is a welcoming message with your invitation to enter the grounds;

This section of fence reinstalled in ABCD
Was part of the original removed in EFGH
Under an agreement with the Melbourne City Council
Whereby the University opened its grounds to the public.

Move along to:

S 37° 47.BFA
E 144° 57.63E

2. You are now outside the old Gatekeeper's Cottage (AD 1860).
The gate lodge suggests that the Univesity site was designed to be a self-contained estate with its own protocols for control and admission to the grounds.

How many sides on the column supporting the fence? = I

Move along to:

S 37° 47.BGH
E 144° 57.5FI

3. The University of Melbourne Atlantes
This artwork was rescued from the Colonial Bank in the city and re-erected on this site in 19JK.
( For the more modern reference the carpark through this doorway was used in the filming of Mad Max. )

Move along to:

S 37° 4J.CHF
E 144° 5J.66K

4. BENE MERITIS
191L - 1918
1939 - 194M

(Before moving onto the next point you may wish to have a look in the area to the north; The Law Quadrangle.)

Move along to:

S 37° 4J.CG6
E 144° 5J.JGL

5. Facade of the Bank of New South Wales
The facade for the Old Commerce Building was recycled from a bank in Collins Street, and was designed by Jospeh Reed.

It was re-erected on this site in 19NP

Move along to:

S 37° 4J.FDK
E 144° 5J.JMP

6. You've got Mail?
Hidden away here is the secret of the University of Melbourne having its own postcode.

The postcode is QRST

Finally along to:

S NJ° LJ.BMT
E ALL° MJ.CAL

This area can be very busy during the academic year, you may need to time your approach very carefully.

Note1: You will not need to enter a garden bed to find the cache.

Note2: ** Cache will be log on for a while until I can determine if the last episode was accidental **
