Alamo History
• 1850s: Alamo named by the Spanish for the poplar trees which
lined San Ramon Creek.
• 1852: Post office established. Located in the adobe home of John
M. Jones. He was the first postmaster.
• 1853: Silas Stone moved to Alamo from Iowa. Henry's Hotel, owned
by Henry Hoffman, was built on Stone Valley Road. The hotel was
torn down in 1953.
• 1854: There were two stores in the village of Alamo.
• 1859: Contra Costa Educational Association was formed.
• 1861: First newspaper, the Pacific Cumberland Presbyter, was
published.
• 1955: Alamo Improvement Association formed. Established to
preserve Alamo as a "semi-rural and low density" community.
• 1993: Incorporation effort dropped after a study showed Alamo
would have to consider a tax to subsidize local services.
• 2000: Population 15,626.
