Geocache Description:

Situated in the Manganuku picnic area and camping ground in the Waioeka Gorge on State Highway 2.

Bring your tent, absolutely beautiful & quiet spot (yet so close to the road).

No bush-bashing, but definitely eye bashing... Let the kids find the hint, then you can recover the cache (safer that way). PLEASE BE VERY CAREFUL when recovering the cache. Our howe-truss is very old, and the banks are steep. You don't want to fall.

Beware geomugglers.

Brain-teaser: Once you found it, explain step-by-step how Howe-truss was created.

Initially Contained: pencil, log, pan&amp:eggs, 2 bottles of milk.

Some history:
Howe-truss was born in 1928. Right now, it is in good condition with high integrity. It's 24.8 metres long, 9.5 metre high and 4.7 metres wide. Setting is lowland forest, mainly tawa, on steep hill country.

Farming was established in the Waioeka Gorge with the first ballot for sections in 1906. It was difficult country to farm with access by packhorse only for many years. In 1928 the bridle track was widened to 16 foot and the next five years were spent by making the track more accessible. This area was settled in 1919 and farmed until 1934. It was a popular picnic spot for settlers who used to meet there for New Years Day picnics. Our Howe-truss is of great significance as a representative and rare survivor of a typical of old New Zealand. Our Howe-truss officially retired in 1964 and quickly started vanishing. A conservation plan was completed by Chris Cochran in 1991 and Howe-truss was conserved in 1992 and 2002. Our Howe-truss is category two listing in Historic Places Trust.

Please note:
This cache has been planted to encourage caching in this area, which is practically devoid of caches. This cache is effectively a vacation cache and we would appreciate a local's assistance with maintenance should a new cacher in this area be willing to assist.
