Geocache Description:

A small cache by an historical plaque on Stanford campus marking the history of the area's original inhabitants.

The Ohlone is a blanket term for the people who lived all about the San Francisco Bay area when European explorers and settlers first arrived. Approximately 10,000 people lived in 40 tribal groups ranging in size from 50 to 500 people. Here is a map of the various tribes around the Bay area: (visit link)

The group that lived on what is now Stanford land is known as the Puichon. A typical Puichon village held about 200 people, and there are 14 known village sites located within a mile of west campus. The oldest was inhabitated more than 5000 years ago. An excellent article on the history of the Puichon and related archeology can be found here: (visit link)

The Santa Cruz Public Libraries has the best overview of the history and culture of the Ohlones: (visit link)

When you come to the site, with a little imagination you can picture what the terrain must have looked like 1000 years ago, and what life must have been like back then. OK--it may take a lot of imagination, especially until they move the construction trucks and equipment nearby that they're using to widen Sand Hill road.

Anyway, this is a spot that I enjoy very much, and one that you may too. Parking on campus is generally restricted between 6 AM and 4 PM weekdays, and is free and widely available after 4 and and on weekends. BUT, for this cache, there is parking a stones-throw away from and within plain sight of the cache, and this is a remote part of campus, and the police don't come by here too often, so your level of risk isn't all that high. (I would not however park here during weekday hours and walk elsewhere--they do indeed ticket for parking on campus.)

The cache is small and visible from the right angle. Please replace it securely.
