Geocache Description:

This cache is along a trail in Malakoff Diggins State Park, once one of the largest Hydraulic Mining areas in the state!

In 1853, the North Bloomfield Mining and Gravel Company used giant water cannons to wash gold from the bluffs you will see here. Water traveled down from reservoirs higher in the mountains through a series of flumes and large pipes. Thousands of gallons of water poured through these cannons, washing away the side of the mountain. The gold bearing soil ran through tunnels containing sluices that extracted the gold. The tailings continued further down these tunnels, dumping the debris into the Yuba River. The tailings washed into the Sacramento Valley, causing the river to overflow and flood Marysville and Yuba City! Hydraulic mining in this area came to a halt in 1884 due to the Sawyer Decision, which prevented the dumping of tailings into the Yuba River.

In 1966 Malakoff Diggins and the town of North Bloomfield (once named Humbug City) became a State Park There is much to see and do here … To learn more about this interesting place, go into town and see the museum, or take a weekend town tour, or hike one of its many trails!
In town there are restrooms, drinking water, Soda machine, and picnic tables ... But no food, so bring your picknic lunch!

The Malakoff Diggins Cache is a camoed ammo can near one of these trails!
There are trees and high mounds of tailings so GPS readings may vary some.

When placed the cache contained:
