A traditional cache with a great view - you can see Mt Cook from here. But.. You'll need a fine day with not too much wind, and you'll need about 7 hours out of Christchurch!
Drive to the highest point on State Highway 73, stop at the carpark (altitude 939m) lock your car and start climbing. Simply follow the ridge to the summit (altitude 1733m). There is no formal track, and it is best to try and stay on the grassy bits rather than the scree. At the cache, there will be so much sky around that you'll see every satellite there is.
Remember this is an alpine region - always be aware of the weather. You will need good boots, adequate clothing (Including a waterproof shell), a good walking stick, sunscreen and good navigation skills (in case it gets foggy). Remember to tell someone reliable where you are going and when to expect your return.
PS: - don't forget there's another cache right near the carpark.
When placed, the cache contained:
- Logbook
- Pencil
- Sharpener
- 1 sunscreen chapstick
- 3 Bandaids
- 3 small badges.
