Gooney Bird Traditional Geocache

This cache has been archived.

Team Rampant Lion: I'm moving west (SF) so asked some friends to help me clean up. Treequest was kind enough to help remove this cache. Thank you very much

Geocache Description:

VERY IMPORTANT: This is a Wildlife Management Area and hunters are present during all active seasons - wear orange. If you plan to search for this cache alone, please make sure someone knows where you are going.

The “Gooney Bird” name for the cache comes from the very unusual footprints I followed in the snow to get to this location. My guess is they were made by a crane or stork (either that or a small alien). Anyway, I followed these for quite some time as I approached the site. Despite the silly name, the cache is well hidden. I expect it will give you a good challenge to locate as you can look right at it’s location and still not see it. Good luck!

If you want to do some homework before you approach this cache pull the Hamburg Mountain Wildlife Management Area topo map available at (visit link) It will give you the topography of the area before you get here. A parking area is located at N41 09.187; W074 31.704.

The cache contains a logbook and the usual trinkets. It is well concealed. When you replace it, please take the time to hide it as well as you found it (thanks).

IMPORTANT NOTES. This cache hunt involves some steep climbs. There is abundant wildlife in the area, most notably black bears which have a thick population in this WMA and snakes (copperheads and rattlesnakes are known to be in this area). Please pay attention to your surroundings and DO NOT reach blindly into holes or gaps (like where the caches is hidden), check with a stick first. Be alert! If you know what to do if you have an encounter with one of these animals you will enjoy exploring one of the greatest natural resources in Northwest New Jersey.
