Geocache Description:

This cache is approx. 25 km inland from Dunedin. If you ruled a straight line on a map between Dunedin and Middlemarch the location would not be far from the line. Those who can use GPS mapping software can spoil their fun if they choose but otherwise just head in the general direction and sniff out the cache.

There is a well-maintained gravel road right to the cache site but a climb up a steep grassy bank is required. Be careful if the grass is wet. The cache is also very close to a 5 metre drop so be cautious in the immediate vicinity. This area suffers from snow during the winter. If you're searching for the cache during this time it would be a good idea to check the weather forecast.

Driving into the cache you will pass over a combined road/rail bridge. According to "Rails in the Hinterland; NZ's Vanishing Railway Landscape" by Euan McQueen (2005), this is one of just five remaining in the country. Two are on the Taieri Gorge line (this one and at Matarae), two on the line between Greymouth and Hokitika and one in the Bay of Plenty. The bridge at this location only became a combined road/rail bridge in recent times. The road bridge was on the verge of collapse and low traffic volumes made it uneconomic to replace. The nearby rail bridge was in excellent order however, so the combined bridge was born. The road bridge has been dismantled. If you drive to my "Pukerangi" cache (GCMDM3) you will cross the Matarae combined bridge.

The cache is a 1.2 litre snaplock container, painted black. When placed it held a few redundant music cassettes. Be nice to keep this theme going.

Accuracy when placed was 6 metres. The cache is at 84 metres elevation.

From the cache site see if you can spot something that resembles the iconic dog of the HMV recording label, hence the name of the cache and the music theme.
