In the mid 19th Century, Collingwood projected its success down Johnston Street in a corridor of industry and commerce reaching out to the rural surrounds beyond the Yarra river. Roads and other structures were built to support the growing transportation needs of the area. This cache is co-located with a key remnant of that era, and can be found by taking a relaxing stroll down what was once a major thoroughfare.
Background & hints: The parkland north east of this cache was home to a number of Hospitals and Correctional facilities in the era in which the target structure was in service, and no doubt this structure helped the travels of numerous inmates and patients, as well as servicing local commerce and travel to the outer eastern regions of Melbourne.
In the 1860s, Ground Zero and its surrounds looked somewhat unlike the current appearance of the location. This view has been significantly different since the middle of the 20th century, when the area was remodeled, and the old structure replaced with a new one near by. The subject of the old photo certainly gives a strong clue to what you are looking for, but take note that the majority of this structure is no longer in existence.
Navigation tip: Newer Melways maps no longer show the obvious approach to Ground Zero, but if you look at a map of the area in an older edition, you will see a clue as to the best path to take, curving around to the north of the replacement structure.

Please Note: There is no need to climb over any safety fences or barriers put up by the Park Authorities. A full-sized pen did not fit in this cache, so please bring your own! This place is not heavily mugglized, but you could be observed from multiple vantage points, so please make sure you are not seen! As always, please make sure the cache is securely hidden in the location you found it in.
Small children should be supervised in this area - the structure is safe and secure, with the dangerous bits fenced off, but this is no place for mini-cachers to roam unattended.
