Geocache Description:

Steep climb with a short stepped climb up rocks to the cross.

The white cross on the fellside, which commemorates Fanny Mercer who was 'accidentally killed' here in 1887, overlooks Buttermere Lake and can easily be seen from the road.

"Fanny Mercer died in 1887, after a fall trying to catch up with the rest of her party. She tripped over her Alpenstock, which was a forerunner to the ice axe. She was carried down on a barn door, as there was no Mountain Rescue in those days. Fanny was a maid at Woodhouse on the shores of Crummock Water." (see log by Dec Dec 13/10/11).

The cross has been replaced - will post a pic when work complete.

There is a definitive path which continues up to Fleetwith Pike and although steep and rocky can easily be negotiated with due care. It is an interesting little climb leading to wonderful views right across Buttermere and Crummock. At the site of the cross there is a Mountain Rescue donation box, so don’t forget to take some small change – those guys do a great job.
