Geocache Description:

The coordinates show above are NOT the actual coordinates. You need to solve the puzzle to get the real coordinates.

Medium size Rubbermaid container.

This is the puzzle to pass along to the genealogist in the family: the one who is always trying to explain why you and Cousin Joe are actually second cousins twice removed. If you’re from an old Virginia family, you will wonder why I made such an overly-simplified puzzle. Everyone else will need to hit the Internet to come up with the correct charts. It is a little tricky, but I’m using standard terms to describe the relationships. You’ll need to carefully draw up a family tree.

And speaking of trees there is considerable tree coverage at the actual cache site, but a clear view of the sky not very far away from the hide.

My grandfather Adam F. Leaf was one of twelve children, but we are most interested in his youngest sister Zelda. Shortly after Adam married my grandmother Eve Apple, Zelda married Eve’s brother Judah. Both families settled down in the barren countryside just outside of Garden City.

The Leafs had two sons. Their oldest son is my Uncle Al. Judah and Zelda had one child, a son Justin. At the age of twenty-five Justin married Pasty Cowface and seven months later their daughter Martha was born.

At thirty, I marry Jackie Cawtme. She is my first wife, but I’m her fourth husband. Jackie and I have two children Pat and Paul. They both married young and now I’m the grandpa of Little Ellie.

Martha married Peter Smith. Their first grandchild is named Madison.

You now have all the information you need to figure out how all the cousins are related though not all generations are named. Note: The X in each equation can have a value of 1 or 2 depending on an extra degree of relationship that might or might not exist between the individuals on the family tree.

N 37 17.ABC W 122 02.DEF

Justin and Al are (1st, 2nd, 3rd or 4th degree) cousins (0, 1, 2, or 3 times removed)
A = X(3 * degree – remove)

I am Justin's (1st, 2nd, 3rd or 4th degree) cousin (0, 1, 2, or 3 times removed)
B = X(degree – remove)

My father is Madison’s (1st, 2nd, 3rd or 4th degree) cousin (0, 1, 2, or 3 times removed)
C = X(degree + remove) - 8

Martha is my (1st, 2nd, 3rd or 4th degree) cousin (0, 1, 2, or 3 times removed)
D = X(degree – remove)

Madison and Ellie are (1st, 2nd, 3rd or 4th degree) cousins (0, 1, 2, or 3 times removed)
E = X(degree – remove) - 1

Uncle Al’s daughter's daughter is my (1st, 2nd, 3rd or 4th degree) cousin (0, 1, 2, or 3 times removed
F = X(degree + remove) + 7

Checksum: Total of ABCDEF = 26

It is very difficult to get an accurate fix here. The coordinates tend to wander. Be safe especially at night. The hint should be a big help.
