Geocache Description:

Gecko Mom and Gecko Dad took advantage of an open Friday to drive the back way up to Cuyamaca State Park for a look at Green Valley Falls and other areas recovering from the Cedar Fire of October 2003. This placement is conveniently placed part way up the Viejas Grade Road en route to Descanso.

You are looking for a camouflaged M&Ms container. Nothing fancy here, except perhaps the fine view out over the Viejas Indian Reservation. On clear days, you can see as far as the Pacific Ocean. Original contents include log sheet, pencil, a sky blue lizard, and a pink lizard. Although this placement is along a dirt road, virtually any vehicle will be able to take you within a few yards of this micro-cache. Please park safely off to the side of the road.

Capitan Grande, the canyon that now features El Capitan Reservoir, was the ancestral home of the Los Conejos Band of Kumeyaay Indians, who practiced farming for their sustenance. In the mid-1800s, other “Mission Indians” were given permission by the Federal Indian Agent to relocate to this area, adding modestly to the population that formed the Capitan Grande Reservation. Unfortunately, San Diego’s growing demands for water led to creation of Lake Cuyamaca and construction of a flume running through Capitan Grande to carry water that originally flowed down the San Diego River. The flume bypassed the Indians’ land, causing them considerable hardship. Still short of water for a growing population, the city was subsequently given permission by Congress to purchase Capitan Grande - without the Indians’ concurrence - clearing the way for a dam that eventually created El Capitan Reservoir. With their proceeds from the forced sale, 28 families from Capitan Grande, including most of the Los Conejos Band, purchased the Viejas Valley where their descendents still reside.
