Close to paved road. There is a small ditch, easy to walk thru next to the road, less then 100 ft.. Bring something to write with . Log only.

This was the starting battle line for the "Battle of Carthage". It took place July 5, 1861. This was one of the first Battles west of the Mississippi. Governor Claiborne Jackson was in charge of the Confederates(4000 men) and Col. Franz Sigel was in charge of the US troops(1000 men) The Confederates were the winners due to their superior numbers, however they had 200 Casualites and the US 44.
Segel retreated to the area of Sarcoxie. This win allowed the confederate to join forces and train their troops.

Took off on a road trip today to pick up the remaining 9 counties in SW MO that we needed for the MO County Challenge.
This one was a nice, easy find. But now I feel the need to read more about the Battle of Carthage!

I love History caches. I was in the area picking up the South East Kansas Counties when I slipped over to pick this one up. It is my first Missouri cache and an excellent find at that. I tried to imaging the skirmish line and our Kansas and Missouri Brothers going at it. It is not hard to believe that we fought ourselves over something as passionate as civil liberty. I think the civil war stands to remind us all just how passionate we are about who we are. I don't think much has changed deep within our hearts as a society. I just pray this never happens to our country again. TFTC&F
