Josefa, July 5, 1851, Rest in Peace Traditional Cache

This cache has been archived.

hangmancalif: While I had hoped to get the geocache back online by today, a nasty case of nonovirus put me in the hospital and I would need more time to get it back up. This site has also been the subject of muggles so it’s time to let this go. I will work on renaming it for the same event in California history, but move its location to a more protected site.

Geocache Description:

Within 100 feet of a sidewalk, but must scramble down a steep embankment of loose rock and gravel. Watch also for spiders and rattlesnakes. Be careful!

From near this site, the only woman to be lynched in California history was hanged for the killing of a miner. While lost to history whether the punishment was just, what is clear is that she was not afforded the due process deserved under our system of justice. Lynched while this area was a part of Yuba County with a courthouse in Marysville, some 20 months after her hanging a court system arrived in the newly minted County of Sierra and Downieville named the seat of justice. Ironically, the site of her lynching is within view of the Downieville courthouse. Cache is a ammo can, and was originally placed with a description sheet explaining the site name; a log book and pen; commemorate coins, and some specialty pencils.
