Geocache Description:

It’s time to grab your GPS and gold pan! Take a short drive out of town and spend a bit of time reliving the Fairbanks Golden Days.

On July 22, 1902, gold was discovered by Felix Pedro in a creek up the modern Steese Highway, spurring the Fairbanks Gold Rush. Today, the city of Fairbanks celebrates this event with it's annual Golden Day's Celebration. This cache will bring you to an area where you can learn a bit more about Felix Pedro, the area gold rush, and the beginnings of Fairbanks. If you’d like, you can try your hand at gold panning in Pedro Creek right across the highway.

Plenty of parking is available at N65° 00.565, W147° 29.940. Follow the paved walking path for as long as possible before entering the woods in order to preserve the natural state of the area. Don't rush pell-mell to the cache site as we found a few holes hidden by fallen leaves - watch your step along the way!

Original contents include a note to the first to find cacher, bear bell, guide to Alaska flowers, bear pins, carabineers, backpacker towels, poncho, mini wilderness buttons, logbook, pencils, and GMOM & CUDDLES TB.
