Until the 1950's, mail was delivered from Kaamanen to Utsjoki by
a 103 km long foot path, which has been used since the 16th
century. A scenic 6 km section, on top of Kenesvaara high above
lake Kenesjärvi, is easily accessible from E75 (both ends).
The cache is at a beautiful spot very close to the southern end
of the path, not far from Kenestupa (marked on most maps);
You'll need to park your geovehicle of choice there, right next to
E75, and walk a dirt road for ~300 meters and the path for another
~200. You don't need to continue that much further for a nice view
over the lake, even if you don't plan to walk the whole 6 km (and
maybe back).
One end of the Kevo nature trail (63 km) is close by. The area
now has GSM cell phone coverage.
This cache is part of a series exhibiting the 27 Finnish
national landscapes, which were chosen in 1992 by the Ministry of
Environment, celebrating our 75th year of independence. These areas
represent Finland's natural features, as well as cultural heritage,
in terms of portraying the land use of the traditional livelihoods,
and their influence on the Finnish landscape. |
