Geocache Description:

An offset multi near Matadero Creek.
11/19/05 Update: Replaced this cache in a different spot in the park, and it was taken before we reactivated the cache. So, this one is being archived.

Matadero Creek starts in Los Altos Hills and today it meets the San Francisco Bay at Mayfield slough. In the days when the Ohlone Indians lived in this area, and as late as 1899, the creek ended just past Alma Street (1899 topo map of the creek watershed region). East of El Camino, today's Matadero Creek flows through an engineered, concrete-lined canal built in the first half of the 1900's. This canal also receives flow diverted from nearby Barron Creek (modern watershed map for the creek). The canal was initially an open dirt-walled channel (mid-1900 photo of canal).

Matadero means "place of slaughter" in Spanish. The creek was given this name by the Spanish residents of Mission Santa Clara because the creek had enough water flow year-round to use as a place to slaughter their cattle, which grazed nearby.

At the posted coordinates, there is a view of the Matadero Creek Canal, and a piece of outdoor art. Use the art at the posted coordinates to determine the final cache location, which is a short walk away (less than 0.3 miles):
a = (the # of panels with waves) - 1
b = (the # of w's in the name of the piece) - (the # of k's in the name of the piece)
c = (the 1st digit of the year the piece was placed) x (the 4th digit of the year the piece was placed)
d = the # of a's on the plaque

e = (the # of waves on the center panel)
f = [(the # of waves on the left end panel) x (the number of waves on the panel just left of the center panel) x (the # of waves on the right end panel) x (the number of waves on the panel just right of the center panel)] - d

The cache is at: N 37 2x.xxx W 122 0x.x

HINTS:

There is no need to touch any plant to find the cache.
There is no need to touch any green object to find the cache, although you may want to sit on one to wait out the muggles.
