We visited to check on this cache, and decided that nothing is really added to the caching experience by having it as a multi - so it is now just a traditional cache, which starts opposite a Hobart landmark - the zinc works.
There are various routes to the cache, but there is no need to go bush until you are fairly close to the actual cache (say 60m or so). We suggest that you follow the tracks until the numbers on your gps start going up again. However, please fell free to choose your own route - particularly if you are a fan of bushbashing (which many logs seem to describe!) The track - which is apparently an old cart track - starts at:
42° 49.528S
147° 19.185E
You can take a stroll along the side of the river, but will have to scramble steeply uphill eventually. Alternatively you can go uphill earlier on (which does avoid all the rubbish that has washed up around the shoreline). The best walk is possibly to make a round trip.
GZ is at:
42° 49.775 S
147° 19.693 E
The cache is still the original container and it is not even a high quality one, We took a replacement container in, but the original was doing such a good job that we took the replacement back home again.
A little more detail can be found in the book 50 FAMILY Walks in and around Hobart (P.32-33) To quote: After 200m the track crosses the head of Porter Bay and a few metres further splits. Take the lower fork and continue to wind along beside the Derwent, reaching [a pleasant little hill] . . . Scramble up the hill on the southern side of Tommys Bight, following rock cairns (we only saw 1 or 2 of these). The trach soon emerges into a clearing on the ridge. Follow the old trail uphill until it joins a major fire trail on the very crest of the ridge. . .
Walk north for about 200m before following a minor fire trail downhill and back to the start of the walk. The trail branches, but both branches lead back. We would give you coordinates, but accidentally deleted them . . . We will ahve to revisit . . .
