I had been waiting for the satellite gods to shine on me long enough to get this cache placed, well today was the day !
This cache is located near the Tafoni Sandstone Formation in El Corte de Madera Creek Open Space Preserve. The Tafoni is a rare sandstone formation located on the Tafoni Trail, a short distance from the Fir Trail. The large sandstone boulders have naturally eroded over thousands of years to create small, shallow caves in the rock, as well as lacy "fretwork" resembling a stone honeycomb. The short trail from the Tafoni Trail to the sandstone features is open to hiking only.
The cache is a decon container hidden in typical fashion and at the time of placement contained the following items -
REI $10 Gift Card
New Small Bison Tube
New Emergency Whistle
New Mini-Mag Flashlight
Small Toy Firetruck
Geekster Geektag #2
Logbook
There is no room for a pen, so please bring your own, also, please make sure you rehide the cache well.
The trails in this preserve are fairly well maintained but can be muddy / slippery at times. The hike is a moderate one, but hiking shoes are recommended. Parking is available at the Skeggs Vista Point parking area located on Skyline Blvd (Highway 35), and the trailhead is just a short walk down the road. GPS reception in this area can be frustrating at times, so bring along the hint just in case and take a look at the pictures before you go.
No bushwhacking is needed to reach the cache, and there is no need to go down anything super steep, just some good old fashioned walking. There are also a number of other caches located along this trail loop so make sure and visit them all. Enjoy the cache, enjoy the beautiful area, and have fun !
