Waddle Canal Traditional Cache

This cache has been archived.

dlv: I have not been able to maintain this cache as it should be - so I am archiving to free up the area for new caches. I will be retrieving the broken container hopefully in the near future.

Geocache Description:

Access to trails: From the center of Penacook, drive 0.6 miles on
Washington Street to Electric Avenue on your right (the street sign
has humor – take a good look at it). Take Electric Avenue 0.2 miles
to a gate and parking area across the road. Cache is in a
“Millennium Time Capsule Tube” that I never used. It will fit small
trade items only. Please make sure cover(s) – opens at both ends -
are screwed back on snugly and rehide well (there can be
dog-walking muggles around)!

The cache is hidden by the old canal and not far from the “new hydro-canal” by the Contoocook Island Park. Part of the river always flowed around the island and through here but with the hydro dam, a deep canal was dug. When my grandparents’ were still living in the house on the other side of the river, I used to watch geese and ducks on the river. You still can see ducks and geese paying a visit to the area. My grandmother told me stories of the old Rolfe
Sawmill that my great-grandfather, Napoleon Richard Merchant, used to work at near this site (but on the other side of the river). There was a log boom around this location too at the time. This geocache is dedicated to Richard and Mary Merchant my paternal great-grandparents. Many years ago, an electric company was near the canal area as well - no doubt where the street received its
name. When walking the trails, please watch children when near the river bank and steep cliff areas (the Palisades/the Bluffs). The main river is not as deep as it was before the hydro dam was built but bodies of water should always be treated with respect especially in the spring. See my Contoocook River Island Cache listing for more history on the park. Enjoy all of the trails if
you have time. It is a lovely area. My Contoocook River Island Cache is in the same park. Be sure to Cache In and Carry Out.

091105 - took quite a few more readings today and changed original coordinates which were N43.16.079 - W071.36.672. The coordinates noted above now should be more accurate.

PLEASE REMEMBER YOU DO NOT HAVE TO MOVE ANY ROCKS TO FIND THE CACHE (you may have to move some leaves and sticks though)! Thanks, dlv
