The cache is located near part of a large ionospheric research
radar. The radar, together with a number of others around the
World, is studying the upper atmosphere to learn how the Aurora
Borealis works and how the material blown off the Sun by activity
at the solar surface interacts with and effects the Earth and our
own environment. The radar is one of three run by the EISCAT
Scientific Association, a non-profit organisation funded by
civilian, non-commercial, research organisations in Finland,
France, Germany, Japan, Norway, Sweden, and the United Kingdom, and
supports university research scientists from those, and other,
countries.
You can find lots more information about the EISCAT Scientific
Association at www.eiscat.se
This radar site is a receiver (hence the cache name) operating
together with a transmitter located near Tromsø, in Norway,
and another identical receiver located near Sodankylä, in
Finland. There are presently no other tri-static radars like this
in the World.
