This is a simple multi highlighting the fact that Wantirna South was not just a place for growing pears and apples, interspersed with pastures for grazing. There was also a much more “important” industry that sadly went into decline.
Start at the given co-ordinates, which should take you to the entrance of the Wantirna Estate Vineyard.
The area had been a thriving grape growing region in the mid 1800’s, but by the end of the 1930’s, all the vineyards had been turned over to pasture because of the economic depression. The 1963 planting of Wantirna Estate Vineyard was the first of the new generation vineyards. Reg Egan, a barrister, planted on the present 10 acre vineyard in Bushy Park Lane, Wantirna South in 1963 and the first vintage was made in 1968. After experimenting with different varieties it was decided that the land was best suited to growing Chardonnay, Pinot Noir, Cabernet Sauvignon, Cabernet Franc, Merlot and Petit Verdot. Much of the Cabernet Sauvignon and Merlot plantings are 40 years old, with the average age of the remaining vines over 25 years old.
As the grapes are all grown on the property, so too are all the wines made at Wantirna Estate. The attention to detail in all of the winemaking process has resulted in wines that are of such high quality that they were included in the cellar of Government House to represent the region.
Interestingly this vineyard is classified as being in the Yarra Valley, which would make it the most south westerly vineyard of the region.
At the gate, find the following information:
AB = the street house no.
CD.E = the letters after Reg’s name that you will see to the left.
XXX = AB X 28 + 492
YYY = The numerical equivalent of the letter in the alphabet for each of the three letters after Reg’s name (ie A=1, B=2 etc.), then (C X D X E) + 306 = YYY
Now go to
S37° 52.XXX
E145° 11.YYY
The cache is just 280 metres in a straight line from the most convenient parking spot. However by walking along the interesting boardwalks and tracks it is a stroll of around 370 metres. The cache is a 7-litre container that is in a shallow hollow and is big enough for large swaps and TB’s if you have them. Hope you enjoy the tour.
