The roundabout was erected ‘by the citizens of Hobart’ to honour the city’s Mayors and Lord Mayors since the first in 1853. The design was the result of a competition. One of the criteria of the competition was that the design should have cost £7000 or less to execute, however this design won despite the assessment committee determining that it would probably cost £7600 to construct. Obviously project management was as good in the 1960’s as it is today; the total cost of executing the design was £12000! The roundabout was opened in 1963.
Despite being a lovely area (believe it or not, it can be a nice place to have lunch on a summer’s day!), the fountain in the middle of the roundabout was allowed to fall into disrepair. In 1997 restoration was done to the water system to enable it to cycle through various patterns as it was originally designed to do. To be honest it’s not the most spectacular fountain, however the sound drowns out the traffic, the mist it creates is quite cooling, and what did you expect for £12000! Cachers who come at night will be treated to a light show (Ooohh!! The colours!)

Note: This is currently the most wheelchair accessible cache in Hobart. You will find that the easiest way to put the log sheet back into the cache is to roll it up and put it into the lid first. If not, it lossens and then the lid is difficult to screw back on.
