Please note Use of geocaching.com services is subject to the terms and conditions
in our disclaimer.
This cache is placed on private property with the permission of the
owners. Please respect both the George Burrows Wildlife Sanctuary,
which you will pass through on your way to the cache, and this
property. All rules set by the New Hampshire Land Trust apply to
this area, such as no motorized vehicles of any kind, no campfires,
etc..
This cache is in the same area as
Shagbark Hickory. Once Scooter saw that people were visiting
his brother’s cache he needed to put his own in. This cache is not
nearly as easy as Shagbark. Scooter is a much smaller and more
nimble dog, so he is a bit more adventurous. You can find this
cache by sticking to the trails, but be careful as sometimes
evidence of the trail becomes difficult to see.
I would suggest that when you are in the parking area look for a
gold/yellow rectangle nailed to a tree, this is the start of a path
that will bring you out to the swamp. This trail starts on the
north side of the beaver pond. Make sure you bring your binoculars
since you will see many species of birds here depending on the
season. Once you get to the edge of the swamp you will see a
stonewall start to ascend the hill. Follow the general direction of
the wall up the hill until you find the Indian Mound (a large mound
of rocks, possibly an old burial site). Once you have reached the
Indian Mound you should be able to see what could be an old logging
trail headed off to the west, follow this trail. You have now left
the Audubon area and are now on private property. The owners have
been kind enough to let the geocaching community use this land. You
are now on an old logging trail. While it is not a straight shot,
it is better than bushwhacking. The cache area can also be reached
if you follow the logging road that starts in the parking area
headed toward
Shagbark Hickory, but you’ll miss the Indian Mound and it is a
much longer route.
Directions: From the junction of NH 150 & NH 107, drive south
down NH 150 for 0.8 miles to Highland Road. Turn right and follow
Highland Road for 0.8 miles to Woodman Road. Turn left onto Woodman
Road (The sign is on the opposite side from the street) and drive
0.4 miles to the Sanctuary Sign on the right. Park on the right
hand side of the road at N42° 53.543 W070° 56.518, there is room
for three or four vehicles here. You will know you are in the right
spot when the golden retriever across the street starts barking.
Please don’t enter the sanctuary in any other areas. Also, even if
you have 4 wheel drive, do not drive up the road.
Trails can be very muddy after the rains so don’t bring the
stroller or wear your white sneakers! Depending on your approach
this could be a pleasant stroll or a brutal bushwack, all depends
on how patient you are.
In the spring and summer the bugs will pick you up and fly you away
to wherever they bring their prey to devour them. Once the fall
arrives the bugs are gone, the trail firms up, and the leaves start
to change. So put this on your leaf peeper cache list.
The cache is the 7.62 ammo can full of goodies, **Oct 1st update,
coords at the top have been updated after the feedback of the first
few finders, Thanks guys!**. When looking for the hiding spot
Mother Nature provided the perfect one! .
