Geocache Description:

Come and visit an area named for its most famous resident.

Joe Ranger was a mountain man-hermit-legend. In fact, locals refer to this whole section of woods as "Joe Rangers".

He was a logger who came down from Canada, and ended up living in what was, at the time, a semi- wilderness. He became well known in the surrounding towns; every so often he would hike into civilization to fill his grain sack up with groceries; visitors said he was a good storyteller.

The cache is located just off of the AT. You can follow the AT most of the way, with about 95 yards of bushwacking required near the end.

There is a small parking spot where the trail crosses the road at:
N 43-42-350
W 072-27-760
(this section of road may not be plowed in winter)

I'm pretty sure his cabin was located at:
N 43-41-842
W 072-27-539

Please wear bright clothing during hunting season.
This is a moderate hike, about eight-tenths of a mile from the parking coords listed above. You might like to park one car here, and another car where the trail crosses Cloudland Rd., making for a nice hike across the section. There is a shelter for camping on Thistle Hill, mid-way between the two roads.
