A hard climb up a steep hill, but the view is worth it on a clear day.

Legend has it that in the mid 1800s, Captain McHarry had himself intered standing up and looking out of the porthole in this vault overlooking the Ohio River so he could curse the other riverboat captains whom he did not get along with. Please see the following link for the full details. WAVE 3

NOTE: DO NOT park in front of the Hy Pointe property. Instead leave your car at the nearby junction of 111 and 211 and walk back to the following coordinates: N 38°08.244 W 085°54.764 It would also probably be wise NOT to set foot on the property to try and take the back way up the hill.

Anyway with the river at your back, you will want to start climbing the steep hill to your right (North). The autumn leaves on the hillside make the climb very challenging. Be careful of which trees you try to grab, many are only loosely attached to the thin topsoil. So wear good boots, carry a sturdy staff and bring a friend (very important). Ground level at parking is around 462' while the top is 814' and about 0.2 of a mile from the final cache location. Underbrush and fallen trees are very heavy in places with occasional thorny stuff to avoid.

The cache is a small ammo box. Please hide it as you found it with the proper camo. Be sure to try and read the inscription over the door before you leave.

Unfortunately, time and vandals have not been kind to the vault. The door's supporting stone on the right hand side (facing the vault) is missing and root growth between the stone blocks is slowly forcing the structure enterance to shift and become unstable. Watch out for the Poison Ivy around the doorway as well.

Fortunately the good captain's body was moved to Cave Hill cemetary in Louisville long ago to be with his wife. You can see it by peeking through the door of the Irvin Mausoleum at: N 38°14.630 W 085°43.164

In the winter the vault can be viewed from the Kentucky side of the river by standing on the Riverview Park levee at: N 38°08.599 W 085°54.052 Enjoy and good luck!
