Geocache Description:

This cache is located off of the old main thoroughfare in Newport, NH. "The Pine Street Cemetery" dates back to 1773 and is located on Pine Street. Parking is available for one car, along the side of the road. There is a nice view of this typical New England town from this location.

This cache is a small, clear Rubbermaid container (not suitable for large objects). It is large enough for small Travel Bugs. It contains a log book with pencil and pen, brass bird ornament, "Red Hat Society" playing cards, "Precious Moments" bookmark, clip magnet, beaded fish applique, smiley figure and 2 packs of "Nicks Expression Cards." There is a special fabric bag filled with objects that relate to Sarah Josepha Hale, for the FTF!

About the naming of the cache...This cache is dedicated to Newport's native daughter, Sarah Josepha Buell Hale. Sarah accomplished many things during her lifetime. She was a teacher, writer, editor of "Godey's Lady' Book," and author of "Mary Had a Little Lamb." It was her letter to President Abraham Lincoln that persuaded him to proclaim Thanksgiving a national holiday. She was also able to raise the funds to complete the building of Bunker Hill and to save Mount Vernon, through the national magazine that she edited. This remarkable woman was ahead of her time.

When entering the cemetery, you will notice the "Buell" family monument. Sarah's father served in the Revolutionary War. Please take the time to read about some of the other family members.

While at this location, take time to visit the other old cemetery on this street and to admire the work of architect Stanford White, as you look at the grand house he designed for Arthur and Lucy Bradley in 1889 -this is now Woodlawn Nursing Home (these places are both north of this site).
