Geocache Description:

Today, this is a quiet spot, where the Skyline Trail crosses Kings Mountain Road. In the later half of the 19th century, it was the site of the small village of Summit Springs.

This was a waystop where teamsters driving loads of redwood lumber between the mills of Tunitas Creek and the docks of Redwood City could pause or spend the night. Here millowner Eugene Froment built the Summit Springs Hotel, and it became the center of an small town that included a stable, store, blacksmith, saloon and a school to serve the eight families in permanent residence. The saloon was operated by Mr. Frank King, whose name remains on the road here and the Skyline ridge high point to the North. By the beginning of the 20th century, the Tunitas basin had been logged out, and the town of Summit Springs (and its saloon) vanished along with the mills and lumbermen it had served. The difficulty rating is for difficult GPS conditions. We averaged three different fixes to get these coords; please post yours if you find significant differences. The ammo can hide is starting out with a Peninsula trails guide, a Lord of the Rings CD, a travel bug, CITO kit, deck of cards, a WoW sigitem, and a few other things. The regular size cache has disappeared a couple of times and has been replaced with a small container located within 3 feet of the previous location. Happy caching!
