To just visit the cache and return 2 hours should suffice. To do the entire walk 4 hours return will be required. Moderate grade.
Park at Nisbett Terrace in Kinloch, 24km from Taupo on the western shores.
This walk will take you through the Kawakawa and Otaketake scenic reserves. The track is posted. 20 minutes in you cross the Otaketake stream the only unbridged stream. There are a few clearings along the way where stunning views of the lake appear. The Kawakawa bay lookout is a large flat rock on the edge of a bluff. This is where the cache is.(about 1 hour from the car park) 30 minutes on from here and you reach Kawakawa bay.
Now if you are really adventurous you can take a track on the right of the Toilet that hugs the lake shore round to the point, not well marked but clearly defined over a more rocky terrain, at the end is a cave (take a torch) S38.40.023 E175.52.009 (approx)
Heaps of birds in the area, Silvereyes, Popokotea, Piwakawaka, Korimako & Tui so enjoy
Cache is an old Ammo box in camo green so it is big and well camouflaged. It is really well hidden so look well. Secure the lid lock well when replacing.
This is rated Taupo's best walk and trust me it is, it is busy as Joggers and Mountain Bikers use it as well, believe me this is a stunning, beautiful walk in the woods.
