Found only in New Zealand, a nocturnal flightless bird, the kiwi
lives within a short distance of this cache.
New Zealand's favourite bird has five species - Great Spotted
(roa), Little spotted, Northern Brown, Rowi And Tokoeka (Haast
Tokoeka & Southern Tokoeka).
The kiwi is a nocturnal creature, has no tail, and is covered with
a hair-like loosely attached feathers giving it a shaggy
appearance. It differs from other birds in that its nostrils are at
the tip of the bill instead of the base, and it has a well
developed sense of smell.
After finding this cache, head across the road and find out more
about the kiwi, and if you time it right (9am to 4.30pm any day
except Christmas Day) you will be able to view the kiwi.
Alternatively head along from the cache to the open area and visit
the Rotary park aviaries for free.
There is not good GPS coverage under the trees, so please do use
the hint.
After parking your vehicle / bike or making your way on foot, find
the little bridge, which will take you into a lovely grove of
trees. Remember kiwis prefer a dark spot.
THIS IS A KIWI THEME CACHE. Where possible swap a kiwi trinket or
similar souvenir please. A 2 litre sistema box, painted black /
green. Please hide well afterwards :)
Have fun!
