There is no there there.
-- Gertrude Stein (1874-1946)
Cue "Alice's Restaurant" guitar loop
Most people who know the famous quote above don't know that it's not the kind of slam on Oakland they think it is. Y'see, most people who're vaguely familiar with Oakland read that and think, "She means that it's a no-zone, nothing interesting, nothing worthwhile." But what Miss Stein actually meant was that she couldn't find the house she grew up in, when she returned to Oakland in the 1930s.
Now, strictly speaking, that's true. There's a lot of old Oakland that isn't there anymore. Still in all, there remains a lot of THERE there.
But that's not what I came here to talk to you about. I came here to talk to you about a piece of public art that caused a teapot-sized tempest of controversy when it was unveiled. And to tell you that I waited, and waited, and waited, for someone to put a cache there.
Well, they didn't. So I did. In the immortal words of Shadow101, "It's There. Go find it."
FTF gets a $1 token from the Oaks Card Club. Named after the Oakland Oaks (another thing that isn't There anymore), the club is a bit of a historical thing in itself -- though it's in Emeryville, not Oakland.
Which is another story entirely.
When it comes around again on the gee-tar, everybody sing...
FTF: SnoWake the indefatigable! Congratulations!
