Description:
This cache was placed by Outward Bound in 2006. The reserve and tracks have been upgraded a lot since then, as has GPS technology. I've left the original description below, as reminder of how finding geocaches was as much an art as a science for old school caches! These days, a smart phone is probably about as accurate under the tree canopy as the early GPS units were.
Park at Spicer Valley S 41.09.243 E 174.49.356 and follow orange markers on the track to Colonial Knob. Some of the markers are triangular route markers - others are just orange paint blobs on trees, but it is a well-trodden path and you shouldn’t get lost. The cache is about 10 mins walk from the car park on a gentle uphill. You can also enter the park at Camp Elsdon at S 41.08.198 E 174.49.675, but the walk to the cache would be much longer (via the top of the hill actually).
Check out the map on display provided by DOC and the local council, note GPS bearing and distance whilst in the open at the start of the track, and re-acquire your position at every chance you get. You will lose GPS en route (unless you have a supersensitive under-bush type of GPSr), and coverage at GZ is patchy at best. One of your first chances to re-acquire your position is over a small hump-back bridge that branches off the track to the right hand side about 5 mins walk from the start.
The cache is dedicated to food .(Please don’t put any real food in the cache as the possums will trash it!), but please share recipes, ideas, and culinary knickknacks. Cache initially contained:

- Cache owners recipe for Flowerpot - Beer Can Chicken (2 or 3 copies)
- Stirring stick
- Wooden skewers
- Surfer Kiwi Travel Bug

A new 2L Sistema was placed on 6/6/2021 (the newfangled 4-clip version with the new seal). It only contains a logbook and pen at this time, but any recipes, culinary items or other themed contributions or swaps are welcome!
