Geocache Description:

Located within Cheviot’s beautiful domain accessed from either State Highway 1 at the southern end of the township or Gore Bay Road from the centre of town.

Cheviot Hills Reserve is situated on the homestead block of the former Cheviot Hills estate. Cheviot Hills, owned by William "Ready Money" Robinson from 1857 to 1889 was famous for its size (33,000 hectares) and also as the first major estate to be subdivided for smaller farms by the Government of the 1890s.
The cricket club pavilion steps were the original Mansion House steps. The concrete foundations of the mansion house are still clearly visible and photographs of the homestead and a detailed floor plan are on display inside the open cricket pavilion. The cricket grounds have been created on the former lawns and the 12 pear trees on the western side of the cricket field are plantings from the original garden.
The reserve is a peaceful woodland of exotic and native trees, some of which are the largest examples of the species in New Zealand.
A series of marked tracks offer a variety of easy walking opportunities through century old oak and eucalyptus trees to plantations of ash, pine and natives. Old hawthorn hedges throughout the reserve are original boundary fences for stock, while box hedging, magnolias and rhododendrons surround the homestead foundations.
A beautiful setting, the reserve is particularly striking in the spring when the flowering bulbs are on display beneath the trees.
