Geocache Description:

The cache is not at the listed coordinates although it is within a mile. Note: The puzzle has been completely revised. See the notes below for details. The coordinates and cache are exactly the same. Everything else has changed. People seem scared away from this puzzle. You don't have to know more than your second bridge lesson to solve it. It is not a fake sprinkler.

Players always prefer to open with a No Trump bid if at all possible. The advantages are obvious: the hand is limited very precisely as to strength, distribution, and stoppers. Once the opening bidder has limited his/her hand with No Trump, the responder becomes the Captain and places the ultimate contract.

Here is a short quiz about responding to opening No Trump bids. How would you respond if you are North? (Note: North-South are playing 15-17 opening One No Trump bids and 20-21 opening Two No Trumps.)

In Deal A, you know you do not want to play in game nor do you have reason to believe that a suit partial would be better. The best bid is to Pass.

In Deal B, you know you do want to be in game. Bid 3 No Trump.

In Deal C, West’s double indicates a hand as good as South. You have a worthless hand for a No Trump Dummy, and thus you know that the partnership is in trouble. One No Trump doubled rates to go down quite a bit. You must bid your Club suit. Since 2 Clubs would be Stayman even over a double, bid 3 Clubs expecting to play it there, doubled or not. You may even make it!

In Deal D, you know you want to play in a Spade game since you are in a guaranteed eight-card minimum fit. Why mess around? Jump to 4 Spades. [If you play Jacoby Transfers, you would, of course, bid 3 Hearts first as a relay to 3 Spades. Then you would bid 4 Spades.]

In Deal E, you would like to be in a slam, provided the opponents don’t have two Aces to take immediately. Bid 4 Clubs, Gerber, to find out how many Aces partner has. When you find out he/she has all three missing Aces, bid 5 Clubs to ask for Kings. When you find out that partner has only one, bid 6 Diamonds if you are playing Rubber Bridge. Bid 6 No Trump otherwise. [Note: This is the same deal as described in the original Double Squeeze with Vienna Coup cache. On a Heart lead, South can make all 13 tricks by employing, oddly enough, a double squeeze with a Vienna coup by unblocking the Ace of Spades before running the Diamonds.]

Many players miss the best bid with Deal F. You would prefer to play in one of your suits, but which one? Your best tactic is to bid 2 Clubs, Stayman, intending to pass whatever partner says. If he/she bids a major, you know you are in a minimum 4-4 fit. If he/she does not have a four card major, the bid will be 2 Diamonds, which you will also pass. Chances are excellent that you are in a minimum 5-3 fit. If partner does have only 2 Diamonds, he/she would have started with 5 Clubs and probably would have chosen a One Club opener instead of No Trump. In any case, 2 Diamonds, even doubled, rates to play much better than One No Trump.
